Technical Consulting Positions
Technical consulting positions require an engineering, architecture, construction science, construction-related, or other technical degree. Project consulting levels require several years of construction experience up to the principal consulting level which requires extensive construction experience and an established career in the industry. A master’s degree in accounting, finance, or economics is desired but is not a requirement. Construction experience requires either one or a combination of the following backgrounds:
Construction Manager/Engineer: Planning construction projects, budgets, and schedules; managing projects from site development to completion; overseeing contract administration, RFIs, and change orders; developing specifications and proposals; and/or letting bid tenders and evaluating construction bids.
Project Manager/Engineer: Managing projects; estimating; preparing proposals; negotiating contracts, change orders, and construction claims; monitoring and overseeing project schedules, cost, quality, and scope of work; and/or working in the construction field.
Cost Estimating: Performing cost analysis, estimating activities, economic and financial analysis, cost engineering, cost performance measurement, and/or change control.
Scheduling: Preparing, reviewing, and monitoring project schedules and monthly performance reports; proficiency in scheduling programs such as Primavera, Expedition, Prolog, and/or other industry-recognized scheduling software.
Construction Claims: Evaluating project cost overruns, schedule delays and disruptions, construction defects, and contractor termination; analyzing change orders, manpower efficiency, and other construction issues; and/or preparing damage models, construction claims, requests for equitable adjustment, and packages for settlement.
Litigation: Assessing and quantifying damages for schedule delays, productivity loss, quality of workmanship, standards of care, and other contractual disputes; developing presentations for negotiations; preparing expert reports and statements of opinions for arbitration and litigation; and/or providing testimony for depositions and trial.
Commercial Group Positions
Commercial Group positions require a bachelor of arts, science, or business administration. Entry level positions require experience in a business environment up to directors, which require extensive experience in a professional discipline. A master’s degree is a plus. Experience in one of the following areas is required:
Consulting: Performing construction and/or business related consulting services; providing market research, productivity, performance improvement, process improvement, and feasibility studies; performing due diligence, acquisitions and mergers, restructuring, and turnaround management.
Accounting/Finance: Providing finance and accounting department support; overseeing all accounting and billing functions; performing damage quantification and economic and financial analysis; and/or performing certified public accounting and/or controller duties.
Editorial/Communication: Supporting executive management, operations, and communications departments; writing and editing correspondence, project documents, proposals, press releases, and marketing materials; overseeing quality assurance for corporate communications and client documents.
Graphics: Providing assistance in IT and graphics departments; developing graphic illustrations, trial graphics, and demonstrative evidence; preparing PowerPoint, flash, and multi-media presentations; designing materials for special events, communications, marketing, and client relations; and proficiency working in Adobe Photoshop, AutoCAD, and/or other graphics-related software programs.
Marketing: Assisting the marketing and business development department; researching and targeting potential projects and client markets; overseeing marketing and business development initiatives; and/or managing corporate planning and development, strategic alliances, and contract administration.
